Sometimes we had a little chaffing from the top of a hiking boot or socks that might be a little tight. Alan, our walk leader, applies a natural remedy found along nearly every trail: Sheep's wool. It's natural lanolin provides a good cushion. We didn't need to chase any sheep as there are bits of wool stuck to many shrubs.
